Aprilia landfill (Rome)

Question for written answer E-007160-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Mario Borghezio (NI)

According to local journalists, the municipality of Aprilia (Rome) is to be the site of two landfills: one is to be used to dispose of waste from a TMB plant, and the other, a ‘multi-purpose’ facility, will cover an area of nearly 100 hectares.

As far as the latter landfill is concerned, the project was, according to the above sources, submitted to Lazio Region on 25 August, but, notwithstanding the public procurement obligations related to the environmental impact assessment procedure, the local administrators in the municipality involved are apparently not receiving complete information about the project from the regional authorities.

Another point to bear in mind is that the proposed site has a water-bearing stratum underneath, close to the Carano aquifer; the water would therefore be in danger of being contaminated by leachate, entailing a public health hazard.

Will the Commission ascertain that the procedures laid down in European legislation are being complied with by the appropriate bodies and are incorporated in the Environment Code as regards interdepartmental meetings and the 60-day period in which information concerning projects must remain freely accessible?
