Exclusion of traditional ‘xeito’ fishing method in the proposal to ban driftnetting

Question for written answer E-008076-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
José Blanco López (S&D)

In this morning’s debate of the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council to ban driftnetting, amending Council Regulations Nos (EC) 850/98, 812/2004, 2187/2005 and 1967/2006 and repealing Council Regulation (EC) No 894/97, the European Commission’s representative at the meeting argued in his response that, during the process of drafting the proposal, no objections of any kind had been made to banning the ‘xeito’ fishing method, which is a sustainable and traditional form of driftnetting, either by the Spanish Administration or by the Galician and Spanish organisations with which the Commission held meetings on the subject.

1. With which organisations and representatives of the Administration did the Commission hold meetings?

2. Did they raise any objections? And if so, what objections did they raise?
