Soil degradation

Question for written answer E-008708-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Giovanni La Via (PPE)

Whereas soil degradation is a worrying phenomenon that affects the whole of European territory and impacts not only the ability to produce food and prevent flooding but also the ability to halt the loss of biodiversity; bearing in mind that erosion, soil sealing and acidification have increased considerably in recent years, with the likelihood that this tendency may persist or increase; and considering that the activities now in progress are not sufficient to guarantee an adequate level of protection for all the soils in Europe;

I ask the Commission:

Could it explain what has been done already and what initiatives it intends to take to manage the phenomenon of soil degradation in Europe?
