Mining activities in Chalkidiki

In April 2014 the Commission was asked by MEP Kriton Arsenis about the pollution of groundwater in north-eastern Chalkidiki and the drainage of Mt Stratonikos caused by the mining activities taking place there.

The Commission then admitted that it was ‘not aware of the water seepage and the groundwater pollution incidents’ and pledged that it would ‘ask the Greek authorities for information on these issues.’

In view of the fact that these mining activities which pose a threat to the environment and endanger the lives of the inhabitants of Chalkidiki are continuing unabated, will the Commission say:
