Discrepancies regarding implementation of Natura 2000 policies in the EU (Netherlands and Germany)

Question for written answer E-009144-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Annie Schreijer-Pierik (PPE)

Investigative journalists from RTV Oost (Overijssel Vandaag 11 November 2014) have uncovered some ‘odd discrepancies’ on either side of the border between the Netherlands and Germany (in the Springendal and Dal van de Mosbeek areas for example) regarding the implementation of Natura 2000 policies.

1. Is the Commission aware of problems arising in this connection along the border between the Netherlands and Germany, reflecting the situation in other Natura 2000 areas?

2. In view of this and other issues arising, should the Commission not bring forward its ‘fitness check’ report on the Birds and Habitats Directives (currently scheduled for the end of 2015/spring 2016) in order to clarify matters?

3. Does the Commission agree that the local and central authorities of the Member States should provisionally suspend implementation of European wildlife protection policies pending a ‘fitness check’ and further assessments, so as to ensure that that irreversible measures are taken only after the situation has been properly clarified, leaving no doubts as to the future?
