Fish food from insect protein

Question for written answer E-009414-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Annie Schreijer-Pierik (PPE) , Esther de Lange (PPE)

Insects and insect protein have a promising future in animal feed and fish food applications.

However, current EU regulations (TSE Regulation 999/2001) require insects to be ‘slaughtered in a recognised slaughterhouse’ for this kind of processing. As this is not technically possible, the regulation (addendum IV) should be amended. Without this amendment companies will be prevented from bringing this kind of innovative product onto the market.

Is the Commission aware of this constraint in current legislation and can it confirm that it can be removed by amending addendum IV of Regulation 999/2001?

Will the Commission work for the speedy removal of this constraint and what practical actions will it take to achieve this?
