Control of external borders and migratory flows

Question for written answer E-009488-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Esteban González Pons (PPE)

There is still intense migratory pressure on the European Union’s southern borders, and Member States in southern Europe with external borders are having to deal with a very delicate situation that is difficult to manage.

In order to deal with illegal migration, it is vital for the EU to encourage development policies in countries of origin and the signing of agreements on the issue with transit countries. However, at the same time, it should be made clear that control of external borders is essential.

The external borders of Member States in southern Europe have become the EU’s borders, and EU migration policy has to be approached from a shared perspective based on solidarity.

In this respect, what specific action is the Commission planning to take in the short term to help Member States in southern Europe control their external borders?
