VP/HR — Violence against Armenian MP Aram Manukyan

Question for written answer E-010917-14
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Johannes Cornelis van Baalen (ALDE)

On 11 December 2014 Armenian MP Aram Manukyan, vice-president of the leading opposition party Armenian National Congress was brutally attacked in what appears to be an act of politically motivated violence. After days of treatment, Mr Manukyan is still in hospital. The incident follows several other attacks on Armenian opposition members.

1. Is the Vice-President/High Representative aware of the Armenian regime’s increased political intimidation of, and attacks against, democratic opposition leaders, in particular the case of Aram Manukyan?

2. Is the Vice-President/High Representative prepared to raise this issue with the Armenian authorities, in particular with regard to the case of Aram Manukyan?

3. Which measures will the Vice-President/High Representative take against the Armenian regime if politically motivated attacks and intimidation continue to be carried out against the democratic opposition?
