Danish support for whaling in the Faeroe Islands

Question for written answer E-011060-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Julie Girling (ECR)

The ongoing practice of whaling in the Faeroe Islands remains a concern to many in the EU. Whilst the Faeroe Islands are not part of the EU, and thus the ban on commercial whale hunting does not apply, it is reported that the EU Member State Denmark provides the Faeroes with naval and police support to deal with interferences with whale hunts and protests during the whaling season.

What is the Commission’s position on this support? What steps is the Commission taking to ensure that EU funds received by Denmark are not redirected towards supporting whaling?
