The practical application of the Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme (REFIT)

In many cases the main obstacles in the path of European economic growth and the creation of employment are EU regulations, which are bureaucratic, seriously interfere in the competence of the Member States and impose unjustified administrative and financial burdens on citizens and businesses. Excessive EU interference can be seen in agricultural policy, food law, animal welfare and environmental protection.

Therefore, I agree with the new Commission’s simplification objectives. REFIT is a wise initiative which can produce tangible results if the Member States, the EP, and the interest groups of the social parties and economic players are adequately involved. For instance, close and continuous cooperation with the COPA-COGECA is essential on agricultural policy, food safety, animal health and environmental issues relating to farming.

Concerning the practical implementation of the REFIT programme, could the Commission answer the following:
