Xenophobic demonstrations by Pegida in Dresden

Question for written answer E-011101-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Josep-Maria Terricabras (Verts/ALE)

On 15 December last, and for the ninth consecutive week, some fifteen thousand demonstrators came out in support of an anti-Islamic rally mustered in Dresden by a group calling themselves ‘Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West’ (Pegida) against the policy on asylum-seekers and the alleged Islamisation of Germany.

These demonstrations of a xenophobic nature come after various incidents in different parts of the country related to reception centres for asylum-seekers in the course of a year in which Germany has taken in over 200 000 refugees.

Obviously, Nazism and xenophobia have no place in Europe, but at the same time the EU asylum policy and, in particular, the Dublin Regulation need to be revised.

1. What measures will the Commission adopt to ensure compliance with Articles 1, 10, 21,22 and, especially, Article 18 of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights (ECFR)both in Germany and in the rest of the EU?

2. In the Commission's view, what measures ought Germany to adopt in the light of Framework Decision 2008/913/JAI?
