Counter-terrorism action and measures

Question for written answer E-000436-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Miriam Dalli (S&D)

The threat from terrorism remains strong in Europe, having reached serious levels in the first days of 2015. More than 794 terrorist attacks[1] were carried out in Europe between 2010 and 2013. These attacks pose a serious threat to the values of our democratic societies and to the rights and freedoms of our citizens, especially as a result of the indiscriminate targeting of innocent people.

A salient issue in view of the current state of affairs, which is giving rise to a clear threat to internal security, is the fact that a significant number of radicalised people are travelling from the EU to conflict areas and then returning to Europe.

In response to terrorism, in 2005 the EU adopted a counter-terrorism strategy based on prevention, protection, pursuit and response. An EU action plan on combating terrorism was later drawn up.

1. Does the Commission intend to enhance the aforementioned measures with a view to curbing further terrorism and minimising its effects?

2. Can it draw up further action plans to counter terrorist attacks?

3. Is it in a position to provide further funding for projects aimed at combating radicalisation?
