Combating food wastage

Question for written answer E-000832-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marielle de Sarnez (ALDE)

Each year around 50% of good food is wasted in the EU, by households, supermarkets, restaurants and the food chain, while 79 million people are living under the poverty line and 16 million are dependent on food aid.

In view of this, on 19 January 2012 Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the Commission and the Member States to take specific measures to reduce food wastage by half by 2025, whilst at the same time preventing the generation of bio-waste.

In France, in June 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture therefore launched a national pact to combat food waste, signed by 31 operators in the sector (organisations, producers, industrial operators, distributors, restaurateurs, etc.) and involving 11 specific measures, including that of promoting ‘doggy bags’.

1. Can the Commission report on the action taken in the fight against food waste at the EU, national and local levels?

2. Will it encourage good practices developed by the Member States, such as that of promoting ‘doggy bags’?
