A recent Freedom House report demonstrated that media freedom varies significantly among EU accession states. The report also showed that seven of the eight candidate or potential candidate countries reviewed have press freedom ratings substantially below the EU average.

Does the Commission intend to set more rigorous press freedom requirements for candidate countries than those envisaged under the Copenhagen Criteria?
