Food waste

Question for written answer E-001826-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ivan Jakovčić (ALDE)

According to available information, more than 100 million tons of food is wasted annually in the European Union at all levels of the food supply, from production to consumption. With proper management of the process from production to consumption this enormous amount of food could be used to reduce poverty and hunger in Europe and the world. Food production also means energy expenditure and it is unnecessary to elaborate what energy savings and reduction of environmental pollution could be achieved by proper and more measured production and consumption of food.

How is the European Commission addressing this issue and what is it doing or planning to do to help solve or alleviate this multidimensional problem?
