Macroprojects with negative environmental impact

The environmental impact of the hydroelectric plant in Navarre is immense. The environment will be transformed along an entire 10 km stretch of the Ebro River, leading to irreversible environmental changes, with irreparable effects on animals and plants protected by European legislation. Around 90% of the volume of water in the river will be removed, which will increase the temperature of the water that ends up in the river, depleting aquifers and wetlands, and affecting sites of Community importance (SCIs).

On the basis of the Natura 2000 network, we have special areas of conservation (SACs), in line with the Habitats Directive, and special protection areas (SPAs), in line with the Birds Directive.

How is the Commission ensuring that this project complies with these Directives, since it would endanger this habitat and threaten these species with extinction?
