Questionable, opaque administration by the EAVF

Rule 130
Pablo Echenique (GUE/NGL)

The Via Francigena is a European cultural route, which was declared as such by the Council of Europe in 1994. It is represented by the European Association of the Via Francigena (EAVF) based in Fidenza, Italy.

The manner in which European taxpayers' money is administered by the EAVF is alarming, since its management is not transparent and it does not keep proper accounts to justify expenditure. The Association’s wasteful spending on the upkeep of the Via is also well-known.

1. How does the European Union monitor the funds it allocates to cultural routes like the Via Francigena or the Camino de Santiago [Way of St James] among others? 2. Does the European Union carry out any auditing by any particular office of the accounts of associations dedicated to administering EU funds for such purposes? 3. Have any irregularities been detected in the accounts of this or any other association? Have the budgets set out in the accounts been spent properly?
