Relaunching the communication campaign for preventing the severe impact of climate change

Question for written answer E-004097-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Daniel Buda (PPE)

The ‘The European Environment — state and outlook’ report launched last week by the EEA reveals that Europe is not on track to halt biodiversity loss, since a series of animal and plant habitats continue to disappear. A high proportion of protected species (60%) and types (77%) are considered to have unfavourable conservation status.

Also, European Union statistics show that approximately 430 000 premature deaths have been attributed to fine particulate matter (PM10). Moreover, exposure to environmental noise has been estimated to cause the death of 10 000 persons due to heart disease and strokes each year.

According to the document, 50% of the harmful impact of air pollution is accounted for by 1% of the industrial producers in Europe, in damages in this case amounting to EUR 165 billion each year. Energy is the most harmful industry, accounting for 67% of the total damage caused.

Taking into account the above, does the Commission envisage a relaunch of the communication campaign ‘You control climate change’ from 2006 and 2008, in the EU Member States, in order to try to prevent the severe impact of climate change?
