Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

Question for written answer E-004508-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a condition characterised by recurrent symptoms attributed to a range of chemical substances, which affects various parts of the body including the central nervous system, circulation and respiratory system, and causes irritation of the mucous membranes as well as metabolic, endocrinological or gastrointestinal disorders.

Those affected by this condition suffer reactions when exposed to chemicals such as perfumes, insecticides, varnish, detergents, multipurpose cleaning and scouring products, petrol, glues, and the like.

It is a fact that the vast majority of those diagnosed are women, and it is also true that many sufferers go through difficult ordeals to obtain a diagnosis (they are often treated as if they are hysterical) and to find clinics that follow the relevant care protocols.

Does the Commission have any information on the current situation as regards diagnosis and protocols in Spain, and in Galicia?

What does the Commission plan to do to guarantee that care protocols are provided in the public health system for MCS sufferers?
