Criteria for business standards in hotels and other accommodation facilities

Question for written answer E-004703-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ivan Jakovčić (ALDE)

Tourist activity, i.e. the hotel industry, has a major role in the economies of the Member States. Accommodation in hotels and other accommodation facilities is regulated differently in different EU countries as regards the minimum technical requirements necessary for carrying out the activity. For that reason, the star rating that provides information to consumers about the standards and quality to be expected is not coordinated. For example, three or four stars have different meaning in different countries, which can harm the consumer.

1. Does the Commission have an analysis by Member State on criteria for quality standards and quality labels in hotels and other accommodation facilities?

2. Are there measures that could unify criteria for the required standards in the industry in relation to labels guaranteeing quality standards in the EU?
