Youth Guarantee in Ireland

Question for written answer E-005425-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lara Comi (PPE)

One of the priorities of the Europe 2020 strategy is the emerging need to tackle the problem of the high unemployment and to guarantee inclusive growth, with high levels of opportunity, in the common market.

Pursuant to the Council Recommendation of 22 April 2013 on establishing a Youth Guarantee, the Member States are required to promote policies which deliver youth employment, especially for NEETs. The ‘youth guarantee’ is intended to respond to this emerging problem, by offering young people under the age of 25 good-quality opportunities of work, apprenticeships, traineeships or other training measures. But the youth guarantee system alone is not sufficient to counter the blight of unemployment. Unemployment in Ireland stands at more than 25%.

1. Is the Commission therefore monitoring the activities carried out by the Irish government to support the development of this scheme?

2. What are the current figures on the implementation of this scheme?

3. Does the Commission plan to adopt other measures on behalf of young people?
