E-005893-15
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Andrew Lewer (ECR)

 Subject:  Euronews funding
 Answer(s)

A 53% controlling stake in Euronews was recently acquired by Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, in return for providing EUR 35 million in capital for the business. Given that this reaffirms Euronews as a privately‐ owned broadcaster, does the Commission feel it is appropriate to continue to provide it with financial support?

Mr Sawaris has previously been active in Egyptian politics. To what extent is the Commission concerned about his impartiality and the future impartiality of Euronews?

In the year prior to the takeover Euronews launched an Arabic channel. Can the Commission confirm whether any EU funds are being used for the running of the Arabic service, and does the Commission consider it appropriate to fund an Arabic news channel, given that it is not an official EU language?
