Nokia's takeover of the Alcatel-Lucent group should be completed by early 2016. According to estimates supplied by the Alcatel-Lucent European trade union coordination committee, the buy-out will result in cuts of EUR 900 million and some 10 000 job losses worldwide. This situation has sparked major trade union demonstrations at the Alcatel-Lucent Italia plant in Trieste. Given that the Trieste plant provides jobs for around 900 people and has a high strategic value due to its location and the fact that it produces highly specialised goods:
- 1.does the Commission know if there are to be any job losses at plants in the European Union, including the plant in Trieste, as a result of the buy-out?
- 2.will it be taking steps to safeguard jobs and production levels at the Alcatel-Lucent plants in Europe, in line with the European reindustrialisation target of increasing industry's share of EU GDP to 20% by 2020, as well as to encourage reshoring?
