Labelling of cosmetic products

Question for written answer E-006884-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Enrico Gasbarra (S&D)

EC Directive No 1223/2009, applicable in Member States since 2013, is exhaustive and particularly thorough with regard to the main dictates on the labelling of cosmetics, protecting the health of consumers by putting a clear ban on the use of substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction. However, numerous products containing chemicals that pose serious long-term health risks, such as phthalates, parabens and triclosan, can still be found on the market today. The lack of clarity on labelling requirements set out in law does not help consumers, and the control of cosmetics for sale on the market is not yet fully guaranteed.

Does the Commission intend to make inspections more rigorous and take action to reinforce the directive, to ensure better health protection by promoting precautionary policies?

Moreover, does it intend to act by increasing sanctions to serve as a deterrent against putting potentially dangerous products on the market?
