Forests are a source of many raw materials other than timber, such as herbs, forest fruits and mushrooms. On 28 April 2015, the European Parliament adopted an own-initiative report on the Commission communication entitled ‘A new EU Forest Strategy: for forests and the forest-based sector’. The report calls on the Commission to promote economic activities, such as growing and gathering herbs and other medicinal plants, mushrooms and forest fruits, by presenting them to EU citizens as a way of dealing with unemployment and depopulation, particularly in mountainous and remote EU regions. The report also calls for the promotion of the products of these activities as beneficial for human health.
What measures can the Commission propose to fulfil this recommendation?
