The number of unaccompanied minors who disappear is still rising. These minors are exposed to a number of serious risks, such as recruitment into organised crime, involvement in terrorist networks, sexual exploitation and organ trafficking. This problem needs to be addressed at European level, owing not least to its cross‐border implications. As recognised in the mid‐term report on the implementation of the action plan on Unaccompanied Minors and in Parliament’s resolution of 12 September 2013 on the situation of unaccompanied minors in the EU, data collection is ‘one of the key challenges’. It is particularly important to overcome the deficiencies in the sharing of information between parties who may be able to prevent and combat this problem.
