The number of unaccompanied minors who disappear is still rising. These minors are exposed to a number of serious risks, such as recruitment into organised crime, involvement in terrorist networks, sexual exploitation and organ trafficking. This problem needs to be addressed at European level, owing not least to its cross‐border implications. As recognised in the mid‐term report on the implementation of the action plan on Unaccompanied Minors and in Parliament’s resolution of 12 September 2013 on the situation of unaccompanied minors in the EU, data collection is ‘one of the key challenges’. It is particularly important to overcome the deficiencies in the sharing of information between parties who may be able to prevent and combat this problem.
In the light of the above, can the Commission:
- 1.clarify the possibility of using European information systems for this purpose, inter alia in the light of Articles 10 and 14 of Council Decision 2009/371/JHA establishing the European Police Office (Europol)?
- 2.report on the implementation of the European Asylum Support Office’s information‐sharing and monitoring system in respect of unaccompanied children, as provided for in the 2012 Work Programme?
- 3.report on other initiatives (coming within the Union’s various types of power) that have been, or may be, taken in this area?
