The problem of uncultivated agricultural land areas in Romania

Rule 130
Daniel Buda (PPE)
At present, Romania’s uncultivated land area is growing, although state subsidies for such areas are available. On the long term, this phenomenon of not cultivating the land leads to the increase of soil vulnerability, and even to its degradation, and it also decreases the country’s agricultural production. As such, crop yield necessary for feeding the population is decreasing, and food imports at an increasingly larger scale are needed. Not only could this yield necessary for feeding the population increase, but agricultural trade could increase as well. If Romania were to increase its agricultural productivity, we could be exporting more agricultural products and this would be of great help for the growth of the gross domestic product.
What measures does the Commission consider should be implemented in order to encourage Romanian farmers to work the land that they own?
