Outbreaks of African swine fever in Sardinia

Rule 130
Salvatore Cicu (PPE)
In recent weeks, some outbreaks of African swine fever have been reported in some parts of Sardinia, especially the area of Anglona (Laerru, Sennori and Nulvi municipalities). With support from the Sassari Zooprophylactic Institute and councils in the area, the authorities have promptly arranged for slaughter and destruction of the stock (more than 150 head in Laerru municipality alone), with consequent economic loss for the affected livestock farmers. The authorities have put together a plan to eradicate the African swine fever virus and begun information campaigns.
Decision 2014/178/EU concerning animal health control measures relating to African swine fever in certain Member States, adopted by the Commission on 27 March 2014, effectively bans the export, except for specific derogations, of certain products from the whole territory of Sardinia. The decision applies until 31 December 2017.
In the light of the above, can the Commission say:
- 1.What steps, if any, it intends to take to support the plan to eradicate African swine fever?
- 2.Whether it intends to offer any form of funding and compensation to help the affected livestock farmers?
