Broadcasting of violent content at times when children are viewing

Question for written answer E-009241-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Jordi Sebastià (Verts/ALE) , Ernest Urtasun (Verts/ALE)

The European Union has specific legislation to warn about the broadcasting of violent content during children’s viewing times. This ban is being systematically flouted by States such as Spain, which allow the broadcasting of images of animal cruelty accompanied by commentaries which prevent viewers from forming an objective opinion.

Various specialists have spoken out against the broadcasting of content with bullfighting on television at these times because of the potential negative repercussions on the moral and psychological development of the youngest generations in our society.

1. What measures does the Commission propose to introduce in order to prevent violent content being broadcast on television in Member States?

2. Does the Commission believe it is right to classify content which shows an animal being killed as suitable for children over seven?
