Reclassification of mollusc cultivation areas

Question for written answer E-009458-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
José Blanco López (S&D)

The Regional Government of Galicia has just decided to reclassify two sets of mollusc cultivation rafts (Portonovo A and Portonovo D) in Zone C, which means that the mussels in the areas concerned can only be sent for canning and not sold fresh. This decision is said to have been taken owing to the pollution of the River Pontevedra as a result of waste discharges.

In its answer to my Written Question E-010245/2014, the Commission acknowledged that the sanitation system in the Pontevedra-Marín-Poio-Bueu conurbation failed to meet the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Directive. The zone concerned is not, however, covered by the operations financed under the ERDF OP for Galicia 2007-2013 aimed at improving the sanitation system.

Can the Commission state whether it is aware of the decision adopted by the Regional Government of Galicia and whether it knows about the sanitary situation on the northern edge of the River Pontevedra and about any work being done to remedy this?

Can it indicate whether any infringement proceedings are currently in the pipeline in relation to the zone in which the cultivation rafts in question are located?
