Pesticides and bee survival

Question for written answer E-010767-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Hugues Bayet (S&D)

On 1 December 2013, the Commission suspended the use of three neonicotinoid products on maize, oilseed rape, sunflower and cotton crops for a period of two years. Scientists have for some years now been expressing doubts over these products in connection with bee mortality.

On Friday, 29 May 2015, the Commission launched an analysis of the scientific data relating to the risks that the use of imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam pose to bee survival.

It is clear that the use of these products should be banned — or at least strictly monitored — as these pesticides are damaging to bee survival, the environment and public health.

Does the Commission not feel that these products should be banned as a matter of urgency in order to ensure bee survival and protect the environment in Europe?
