 Subject:  Plans for new Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea
 Answer(s)

On 18-19 June 2015 in St Petersburg, a protocol was signed between the Russian Gazprom company and three EU energy companies, Shell, E.ON and OMV, envisaging the project of building stages 3 and 4 of the Nord Stream pipeline with additional capacity of 55 billion cubic metres annually.

1. Has the Commission been consulted about the plans for a future increase in Russian gas supplies to the EU market via the new pipelines in the Baltic Sea?

2. What is the Commission’s position as regards these plans, bearing in mind the following:
(a) the continuing, and even growing, dependence of the EU on gas, and on Russian gas in particular, in contradiction with the basic strategic aims of the EU Energy Union;
(b) b) the political, security and economic interests of the EU Member States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and others), which will be bypassed with increased Russian gas capacity;
(c) c) the political, security and economic interests of Ukraine, which will become even more vulnerable and weakened as a result of losing its existing strategic importance in terms of being an important transit country on the Russia-EU gas transit route?
