Improving indoor air quality in European buildings

Question for written answer E-011470-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Christel Schaldemose (S&D)

About 80 million European citizens live in damp and unhealthy homes (White Paper ‘Towards an identification of European indoor environments’ impact on health and performance’, Fraunhofer Institute, 2014), which has a very significant negative impact on the health of European citizens. This includes nearly doubling the risk of asthma when living in a damp and unhealthy home and increasing the risk of allergies.

In view of these facts, does the Commission agree that improving indoor climates of European buildings should be a EU policy priority? Could the Commission also provide its view regarding how to make this happen through the relevant policy initiatives — including the Review of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the communication on Resource Efficiency Opportunities in the Building Sector (COM(2014) 0445)?
