VP/HR — Commission's view on plans to increase supplies from Gazprom

Question for written answer E-011499-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marek Józef Gróbarczyk (ECR) , Jadwiga Wiśniewska (ECR)

Shell, Gasunie and the OMV Group have signed a statement of intent with Gazprom to double the capacity of the Nord Stream pipeline system from 55 to 110 billion cubic metres. This will make Europe even more dependent on Russian energy supplies.

Taking into account the third energy package and the fact that we are in the process of building a European Energy Union, what does the Commission think of the statement of intent signed by the energy firms?

Given EU Member States’ ever growing dependence on energy supplies from Russia, does the Commission consider the deal to be a negative development?
