VP/HR — High Representative's remarks on political Islam

Question for written answer E-011771-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marine Le Pen (ENF)

On 24 June 2015, the High Representative gave a speech about Islam in which she said the following: ‘I am not afraid to say that political Islam should be part of the picture. Religion plays a role in politics — not always for good, not always for bad. Religion can be part of the process. What makes the difference is whether the process is democratic or not.’

What kind of role does the High Representative envisage for political Islam, given that secularism and the separation of Church and State are seen as fundamental principles in most Member States?

Is the High Representative looking to introduce Sharia law — the Muslim legal system intrinsic to political Islam and judged to be incompatible with democratic society by the European Court of Human Rights in its 13 February 2003 ruling in the Refah Partisi case — in Europe?
