Russia: illegal embargo and destruction of food

Question for written answer E-012404-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Anna Elżbieta Fotyga (ECR)

The Russian Federation has marked the introduction, a year ago, of sanctions on the import of food products from countries opposed to the attack on Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea with a widely publicised move to destroy foodstuffs. Tons of food are being destroyed for purely political reasons in full view of the cameras in a country whose population has suffered from famine many times in the course of its history. No mention is being made of the fact that, just under two decades ago, Europe and the US sent more food aid to Russia than it did to African countries.

Has EuropeAid, a World Food Programme partner, looked into this matter?

Have the products that are subject to Russian sanctions been put to good use in EU humanitarian and food aid programmes, in particular FEAD (Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived) national operational programmes and humanitarian aid programmes for countries such as Ukraine?
