For many years the seas around Europe were used as a free repository for barrels, and other containers, of nuclear waste. The lack of complete information in the public domain relating to this practice prompts me to ask the following:
- 1.Has a record been kept of all the radioactive waste containers which have been sunk in European waters, including information on the location of dumps, the quantities involved and since when the material has been dumped?
- 2.Has a plan been drawn up for the monitoring and appropriate disposal of containers? Which authority/authorities are responsible for monitoring containers, checking whether they are intact or leaking, and measuring radioactivity in the surrounding area?
- 3.What is being done to protect human health and the environment?
