Food defence

Question for written answer E-013756-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Esther Herranz García (PPE)

In the US there is a Food Defense Agency (FDA) federal law to guarantee consumer safety throughout the whole food chain. No similar laws or legislative measures exist in the EU at either Member State or EU level, although the private sector has partially filled the gap through the IFS and BRC food safety standards.

Does the European Union have plans to introduce legislation regulating this field in order to protect consumers and help the export of Community food and agriculture products to non-EU countries such as the US, which already has the FDA legal food safety standard?
