VP/HR — Possible role for the European Union in resolving the conflict in Syria

Question for written answer E-014255-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Zoltán Balczó (NI)

The principal way of reducing the influx of migrants into Europe ought to be by drying up the source from which they come. To this end, it is necessary above all to establish peace and a stable State in Syria.

In international analyses, various countries are seen as important players in peace-making — the USA, Turkey, Iran and Russia — but the European Union is not, although the consequences for us are serious.

1. What possibilities does the VP/HR see for direct participation by the European Union in resolving the war in Syria?

2. What is the VP/HR’s assessment of the role currently being played by Russia in resolving the conflict, and of the role that it could play in future in this respect?
