VP/HR — Attack on Camp Liberty in Iraq

Question for written answer E-015028-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Julie Ward (S&D)

On the evening of Thursday, 29 October 2015, a rocket attack took place on an Iranian dissidents' refugee camp, known as Camp Liberty, in northern Baghdad. Dozens of rockets were fired into a civilian community, 23 people have been confirmed killed, dozens more injured, and homes and electricity generators were destroyed in the attack.

Camp Liberty is home to more than 2 200 unarmed Iranian exiles, and has previously been attacked with rockets several times since 2013. Militias have now threatened further assaults. It is alleged that Camp Liberty's Iraqi management team, under National Security Adviser Faleh Al-Fayyadh, have been complicit in organising the attack, along with the Iranian regime.

1. What humanitarian assistance and long-term support can the EU provide to the survivors and residents of the camp?

2. What measures will the EU take to pressure the Iraqi authorities to guarantee Camp Liberty's security and prevent future attacks?

3. Will the EU put pressure on Iraq to change the camp's management team?
