Improving security within the Schengen Area

Question for written answer E-000026-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nadine Morano (PPE)

In response to the current tragic situation with regard to migration in Europe, on 15 December 2015 the Commission presented a set of measures to improve the EU's external border control. These measures include reshaping the way in which Frontex operates and modifying the Schengen Borders Code to introduce systematic checks on EU nationals at the borders of the free movement area.

The Commission has acknowledged that the actions taken until now to stem the migration crisis have had mixed results.

Indeed, according to Commission figures, nearly 1.5 million people have entered the EU illegally. This massive influx of migrants could lead to major security problems within the Schengen Area. The despicable attacks in Paris on 13 November 2015 have shown, unfortunately, that terrorists are able to pose as migrants and enter the EU with murderous intent.

Strengthening the EU's external border control goes hand in hand with strengthening internal security within the Schengen Area.

In this context, what measures does the Commission intend to take, both within the Schengen Area and at its borders, to help Member States enhance the security of their citizens?
