‘Aerial territorial continuity’ is a legal instrument that enables each Member State to provide air links between their peripheral airports, such as those located on islands, and the main airports on their territory or on that of other Member States, at reasonable prices and meeting specific conditions relating to timetable, capacity and flight frequency.
The principle of aerial territorial continuity is of strategic importance for Sardinia, which, due to its isolation, must be able to ensure that its citizens are able to exercise their right to mobility and economic development.
Aerial territorial continuity systems often include forms of subsidies granted to airlines responsible for providing the service, which is why they are subject to existing EU competition law.
Can the Commission say:
- 1.what aerial territorial continuity models currently exist in the EU, in accordance with existing legislation and with particular reference to islands;
- 2.what methods of financing for aerial territorial continuity systems are compatible with EU rules on state aid?
