EU Development aid is an extremely useful tool for putting into practice the principle of global solidarity and helping societies that are experiencing poverty and hardship.

It is very important to make sure that this aid is put to use in the most effective way possible, however. What criteria does the Commission use to assess how effectively development aid is being put to use? Do these criteria vary from region to region? How frequently is this assessment carried out, and are the results used as a basis for determining what financial aid should be granted in future?
