VP/HR — Death in police custody in Tunisia

Question for written answer E-000517-16
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Barbara Matera (PPE)

A recent report by Amnesty International found that in Tunisia there have been six deaths in police custody since 2011 which have not been investigated or prosecuted by the local authorities.

The detainees, some of whom were women, were subjected to torturous conditions, including receiving electric shocks to their genitals and being cuffed to sticks. Their bodies were returned to their families without full details about their deaths.

Police have also been harassing religious individuals and their families under an overly vague anti-terrorism law passed in July 2015.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of this situation?

2. What is the EU doing to address the slide back towards police brutality in Tunisia?
