Directive 2006/126/EC of the European Parliament and the Council: cars with automatic transmission

Question for written answer E-001002-16
to the Commission
Rule 130

When a person passes a driving test on a car with automatic transmission, under Directive 2006/126/EC the licence must bear an indication restricting its use to the driving of vehicles with automatic transmission. The number of automatic transmission vehicles is increasing at a growing rate, while vehicle technology is also developing rapidly.

What is the basis for the restriction in the directive and, given that automatic vehicles are increasingly common, should not the directive be amended to correspond more closely to the needs of the present day and modern technology?
