Stress tests for nuclear power plants

Question for written answer E-001036-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Peter van Dalen (ECR)

In the aftermath of Fukushima, the EU insisted that all 143 nuclear power plants in the Member States should undergo stress tests. That was five years ago. Several countries, including Belgium, decided to extend the lives of their nuclear power plants, partly on energy security grounds. Over the same period, an alarming number of malfunctions and incidents have occurred. Instead of reacting to incidents, we need to carry out further preventive inspections to determine whether nuclear power plants are safe.

1. Does the Commission agree that the stress test for nuclear power plants should berepeated every five years, and is it planning to submit a proposal to that effect?

2. Does the Commission agree that this time the tests should be carried out by independentexperts and that they must be more rigorous?
