VP/HR — Counter-terrorism cooperation between the EU and Asian countries

Question for written answer E-001056-16
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Francisco José Millán Mon (PPE)

In a joint statement issued to wind up the 12th Asia-Europe (ASEM) Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Luxembourg in November 2015, the ministers noted with concern the threat posed to international peace and security by terrorist groups, including ISIL/Da'esh. During the meeting, the High Representative had stressed that combating terrorism and radicalisation were priorities for Europe and Asia.

On 14 January 2016 Islamic State/Da'esh carried out a major terrorist attack in Djakarta, Indonesia. It was the first attack by the group in south-east Asia, and shows how its influence has increased among the most radical parts of Indonesia.

1. In the light of the foregoing, could the High Representative state how counter-terrorism cooperation between Europe and Asia is to be implemented?

2. Will it feature prominently on the agenda of the ASEM Summit that is due to take place in July 2016?

3. Will it be an important element of EU-ASEAN cooperation?
