State of play of readmission agreements

Question for written answer E-001497-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Mariya Gabriel (PPE)

Ensuring the effective return of irregular migrants is essential to enhance the coherence and credibility of our common migration policy. The EU has to date signed 17 readmission agreements, mainly covering the EU’s eastern flank. Bilateral negotiations on readmission with countries on the southern side seem to be lengthier and much more complicated.

What is the state of play concerning the ongoing negotiations with North African countries such as Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, whose mandates date back to 2000, 2002 and 2014 respectively?

Does the Commission envisage opening new readmission agreements with key sub-Saharan countries of origin, such as Nigeria and Senegal?

According to a study by the European Migration Network, evaluation of the effectiveness of readmission agreements at national level remains limited. What has the Commission done to date to encourage Member States to carry out studies on the effectiveness of such agreements at national level?
