Investigation into the abduction, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni

Question for written answer E-001875-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Javi López (S&D)

The recent wave of torture and forced disappearance of both Egyptian and EU citizens, including the Italian academic Giulio Regeni, who was abducted and tortured to death three weeks ago, has drawn attention to the unprecedented rise in repression and violence in Egypt. On top of that violation of Egyptian citizens' human rights, the escalation in radicalisation and political violence (‘the crackdown’) is exacerbating insecurity and instability in Egypt. The Nadim Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence has compiled at least 474 cases involving people who died and more than 600 people who were tortured at the hands of Egyptian security forces in 2015.

Does the Commission intend to ask Egypt to investigate the abduction, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni?
