Is there an EU exit strategy for the UK?

Question for written answer E-003917-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lefteris Christoforou (PPE)
Throughout the EU, the forthcoming UK referendum on whether or not to remain is a burning issue.
Serious concerns are being expressed and many questions raised about the possible consequences of British exit and the future of the EU.
While such fears may be exaggerated, the EU, with its wait-and-see attitude and its refusal to comment, is not helping matters.
It is reasonable to argue that European citizens have a right to know what will happen the day after, something that only the EU can tell them. They also have the right to know whether the EU has any strategy for dealing with the situation.
In view of this:
- —Can the Commission say whether contingency plans have been drawn up should the UK vote to leave?
- —Does it intend to make an official public statement regarding the possible consequences of such an eventuality?
